Teen John Hawthorne charged with murder stabs Joel Boner, homeless man 15 times…self defense?

OCOEE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) – The Ocoee Police Department is investigating the stabbing death of a homeless man. It happened Wednesday morning.

Officers responded to the intersection of W. Colonial Drive and Bluford Avenue around 6:45 a.m. in reference to a man in the roadway. Upon arrival, they discovered a Joel David Bonner, 30, with multiple stab wounds to his upper body. Bonner was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he passed away from the injuries.

Shortly after arrival on the scene, two suspects were identified and taken into custody. Police said John Hawthorne, 19, admitted that he had stabbed the victim after a fight. Hawthorne said he and a friend had been riding an ATV in the wooded area near Lake Bennett when they came upon a homeless camp. Bonner, who was asleep inside a tent in the camp, came outside upon hearing the commotion. Hawthorne said he told Bonner that he needed to “leave the area.”

Investigators said Hawthorne began cutting property belonging to the victim. An argument ensued and a physical altercation resulted in the victim and Hawthorne falling to the ground. Hawthorne said when Bonner climbed on top of him, he (Hawthorne) reached into his pocket, pulled out his knife, and began stabbing Bonner. Hawthorne and his friend began to leave the area with the victim requesting help.

Bonner attempted to walk out of the woods to a convenient store but collapsed on Bluford Avenue.

After questioning, Hawthorne also admitted to police he had a problem with Bonner, who he claims had flirted with him in the past. Hawthorne said he stabbed the man in self defense, but investigators don’t buy it.

“The victim was stabbed 15 times and one or two stabs thats defense maybe. When you get 15 stab wounds — four in his arm , one pectoral and five in his back — that’s not defensive. In his own admission and the witness, the victim turned and walked away,” said Ocoee Police Det. James Berish.

People who work at the nearby convenience store said they knew Bonner as a nice man who never begged for money.

Hawthorne is charged with first degree murder. The location of the camp in which the victim resided is not owned or controlled by Hawthorne. The friend is not being charged at this time.

Is this self defense? Does this change your perspective of John Hawthorne, and Cameron Milner? We think we know allt he answers, then we find out something like this…this is too tough. I am watching a young mans life being taken from him, meaning Hawthorne. Some may say that Hawthorne gave his life away. Either way, hes going away for a long time.

John Hawthorne stabbed the victim 15 times, the unlce of the victim is saying that John Hawthorne is lying about the statments given to the authorities. Is this your belief as well? Another point I wanted to make. The knife is reported 6 inches. Whoa, that is a lot of inches to have stabbed or jabbed into the human flesh. I held a ruler up to my body, and yes I am over weight, however…it is painful the thought to take even one stab wound from a 6 inch knife. What are your thoughts? The ruler that I used was a 12 inch ruler. Itwas placed next to my waist from front to back just to get an idea of where the knife would have stopped if it entered me. I measured about 6 inches exactly. My son measured 5 inches, and my husband measured 8 inches in depth from front to back. Meaning if you stabbed my husband who is about 240 pounds and 6′2, the knife of 6 inches could do some damage. I did this because I wanted to know the impact of a 6 inch knife. That’s pretty bad. I don’t know how this story or case will pan out, but I plan on keeping you up to date on the latest developments. Please feel free to leave your comments. This is an open forum. Please be mindful that two familes just lost their loved ones. One will never see their family member again.

I had not reas the entire story on this case. I am a writer and blogger did not read that he had been stabbed 15 times until today July 23, 2009. I am so sorry for anyone that reads this story and feels that I am somehow protecting John Hawthorne, I assure you. I am not. As a person, my first instinct is that of either a normal reasonable think adult. My first question is…How could someone with that much potential for life do this? On my blog a comment came in today that said, how could I be shocked that an attractive young caucasian male do something like this? Its easy, I’m human and do not understand a person taking the life of an innocent man. I cannot carry the burden of thinking I’m the only one who judges a book by its cover at times. WE all do it to some degree. Sometimes I roll my window up for the black guy walking past my car and give the innocent white male the benefit of the doubt. Give me a break here, we’ve all done it. However, I have presented in blogs related to this story, that John Hawthorne had changed and was not the same man that I saw in the photo taken at high school. Leave your comments on this open forum.

    The Orange County Murder Map is up to 52; eleven more murders since my nephew’s in July.
    The sad revelation I had last night is that people of John Hawthorne’s young age (he is the confessed murderer of my nephew) have never known a world without rampant cruelty and violence. This is so heavy on my heart. No, i would not want children in this world. Joel was raised in a strict Christian home and home-schooled, kept out of the mainstream by his family until he was 26 years old. They had no television, no internet and no newspapers. He was basically a young child in his understanding of this declining, volatile world and had no idea of the cruelty, hate and utter disregard for human life people express through these heinous acts of violence.
    He was a lamb who walked into the slaughterhouse.

    What i read:
    His bio says he left home at 26 to join the Job Corps in Hawaii where he graduated with a certificate in Culinary Art. Before that he lived at home with his family and shared the work they all did on the farm they managed. No one “gave up on him” and he was employed during his short stay in Florida. He worked for a temp agency. The pay stubs were found among his belongings.
    He was going to return to Hawaii but decided to stop off in Durham NC and FL for a while.

    What I’ve have read about John Hawthorne:
    busted for drugs and alcohol, drunk driving and underage drinking, unemployed, high school drop out, homophobic, known for fighting and hated homeless people as a whole.
    No remorse.

    After visiting Paul and Carol and Joel’s siblings on the farm this whole thing is even sadder. Not that ANY LIVING HUMAN BEING’S life is without value, but being with the family and seeing what gentle people they are and how loving and caring they are for each other just breaks my heart even more.     That statement tells the world that John Hawthorne knew Joel previously. He wasn’t randomly riding an ATV in the woods and happened to discover the camp of a guy who had flirted with him. What a coincidence, huh? It was premeditated.
    We ALL have intense emotions. We don’t commit murder. We don’t even act out by causing confrontations. John Hawthorne did–he had a history of it. WHY did JOHN HAWTHORNE murder JOEL BONER? What was their relationship REALLY?
    I was just reading in the coverage of the “Craig’s List killer” that EVERY SEARCH, EVERY POSTING, EVERY TEXT MESSAGE OR TWITTER ON A COMPUTER LEAVES A CYBER FOOTPRINT.     When I travelled round europe I too lived in a tent for 6 months. My friend and I left our loving families with a sense of adventure – like Joel Boner. I was always told by my parents to respect everyone “there for the grace of god go I” was my mums expression. Like Joel we never stole or caused trouble just wanted to see the world. This was in the seventies. We never experienced any problems and met many great people. What has happened to the world since? Someone can be murdered in cold blood for “being homeless” and the the person who committed this crime is out on bail. What message does this send out.     Sometimes Lon when I write, it takes me to another place, that sometimes I don’t want to be or feel its not good for me. In the long run, I say whats on my mind or heart, however, sometimes it leaves me hurt and angry by mankind. I’ve become sullen and bitter at times watching the actions of humanity and my heart aches at the disgusting things we do to each other. I’m saddened by the reality that so many don’t care, but I try to find a way to believe that there are many out there that have a heart of purified silver. You have to believe that too Lon. I know its not easy, and of course you’ve had a great deal of pain poured on your family, and you and Carolyn seem to be exhausting all of your tears and anger on this blog. I don’t mind at all, and your words will help so many feel different. I’ve read other sites and saw you two there as well. Be encouraged. Have you started a site for Joel?     on what had been family property. John is 19 and still lives at home, now sentenced to home. Never even had a job maybe his dad gave him money. Joel worked in Ocoee for a temp agency.

    This all leads me to one conclusion. We live in a cruel f’in world. I’ve gone through more in my 20 years on this earth in this small town then whole towns of people could ever dream of. Starting with my 9th grade year loosing close friend Daniel Loople, followed by Nick and Juan crashing and dying just half a mile from my home, also close friends. Then somehwere in gods wrath decided to take the life of Nicks girlfriend and a couple of her friends in a deadly car accident just weeks after the death of Nick and Juan. Not to make a pity party but also lost my grandma, uncle, two aunts, and just recently a cousin all within this same 3-4 year span. This is not even half of the deaths this town has seen that have hit close to home, just the ones that affected me. This town has gone through so much tragedy in the last 5 years, it leaves me no hope of a happy ending to my life. This event with Hawthorne includes yet another teenager and will also not have a happy ending. What is our world coming to….

    Where I grew up we used to be able to run around free of worry. We would take treks into the woods, fish in a stream, play hide and seak after the street lights went off and return home with little more than a rare scrape. But where John lived the woods were infested with vagrants and the stream filled with discarded beer and liquor bottles.

    In some of the above I think I saw a comment about Johns age and where his parents were? I wonder where Joels Family was when he left home at the age of 16. Where was the town law enforcement after repeated complaints? What kind of Upstanding Family leaves their own problem (Joel) for others to deal with? Your potential answer brings about another question, if Joel was too hard for his own family to control/ reason with then exactly how would you expect for a 19 year old boy to deal with him? I am not sure of the actual event anymore than the rest of you but I see how this could be considered self defence. no doubt was John in the wrong when it comes to vandilism, if that is in fact true, but at what point does that become reason to strangle a small 120lb boy within inches of his life. exactly how tall was Joel? How much did he weigh? Exactly when do you begin to fear for your life? How many blows from a man twice your size should you take before resorting to a weapon?     This event didn’t begin when John left his house that night it began when Joels Family decided to give up on him and leave him for us to deal with. It was exaserbated when Ocoee police and town hall decided that it was too easy not to do anything about the homeless camp a stones throw from a family home. It was a stupid idea to create conflict with a homeless man. the situation was unstopable when Joel decided to take out his years of pent up rage by beating some dumb kid. It was Instinctual for John to Get home however possible, including deadly force. It was a huge lapse in judgment or character for John to not call the police after the fact.

    Agian I pray for the souls of both involved in this event and the families left to deal with the mess. i can only encourage both families to put aside their guilt and rage and consider the acctuality and gravity of our choices.

This witness of Joel’s final moments said the victim was bleeding heavily from the mouth. These boys did not expect Joel to live and they did not expect him to rise and ask for “their help”. Joel was able to move about two hundred yards to the spot where he was found. Who would have thought that?
    It is important to resolve this heinous murder and every murder. Murder is a crime against society and the individual. Most individuals in society will not commit murder. For that reason alone murder should be discouraged by proper judgment and punishment. No grandstanding by killers. What is the benefit to society and civility to allow self-confessed murderer to direct the trial? Let the facts of the crime scene, the evidence from Joel’s body stand alone in evidence before allowing the “story “ of the killer to pervade the court.
    Nearly 100% of the media coverage presented is sourced from John Hawthorne himself via the first report on the news. In that report police stated what John Hawthorne told them. I have no idea why Cameron Milner has not been charged. Milner absolutely qualifies as Accessory before and after the fact and in between he qualifies as an accomplice to murder. There need to be charges filed now.
    Set an example in sentencing that will provide a deterrent to the crime.
    That Florida is now the #1 homeless torture/murder state in our country is a thing of shame not honor. Perception is important. Roll back the clock on prosecuting criminals in Florida. People were safe to travel and enjoy the scenic beauty FL offers.
    Take stand against lawlessness, we are a nation of laws, return to enforcement of Capital Crime.

Of course, since there were 2 of them against Joel, who had been awakened by Hawthorne cutting his tent, there was twice the adrenaline and hatred giving Hawthorne the boost he needed to physically stab someone repeatedly. My God that is BRUTAL. Just plain brutal. Then they went to the party house, showered and posted on FaceBook. Sweet kids.

    Boner was 32 years old. He was living the way he wanted to. He had traveled to many other countries and was living the way he wanted to. He was employed.
    The real question is where is the family of a teenager who is out all night DRUNK? At 19 he is under age. Now that’s a question that should be looked into.

I just thought id put it in these terms for you to think about. Think about being in his position. I wish for Justice to be served and those guilty to be punished. I pray for the family of Joel Boner and also the Hawthorne family who has a scared 18 year in jail that just experienced probably the worst event of his entire life.

    Where did this “flirting” occur? Where had they previously encountered each other? More than once?
    Was it at the convenience store? The convenience store is located close to both the house where Hawthorne & Milner partied and the location of Boner’s tent. All three locations were/are within a mile of each other.
    This would lead one to believe the perpetrators knew where Joel was camped.
    Perhaps they had even been there before.
    In addition the statement by Hawthorne that the murder victim “rubbed him the wrong way” suggests Hawthorne had more than that one “accidental” encounter on July 22 with Boner. One would get the idea Hawthorne knew where Boner’s tent was located and purposefully set about to harass him.
    Hawthorne is implying that Boner was homosexual, which makes this a DOUBLE HATE CRIME.
    Does that give Hawthorne and Milner the right to viciously murder a man sleeping in a tent?
    What’s going on here? Ocoee sounds like a scary place to live.

    8/27/09 State declares open season on those thought to be or judged to be homeless/or other by any Florida citizen even the dumbest fake white power dregs of “civility” (sure as hell no society there) 19 year olds.
